A counterexample to the geometric Chevalley-Warning conjecture

چکیده
We construct a quartic threefold with L-rational singularities which has torsion in its middle homology group. This answers a question of Brown and Schnetz for all fields of characteristic zero.

Stable Birational Equivalence and Geometric Chevalley-warning
We propose a ‘geometric Chevalley-Warning’ conjecture, that is a motivic extension of the Chevalley-Warning theorem in number theory. It is equivalent to a particular case of a recent conjecture of F. Brown and O.Schnetz. In this paper, we show the conjecture is true for linear hyperplane arrangements, quadratic and singular cubic hypersurfaces of any dimension, and cubic surfaces in P. The las...
متن کاملOn the oriented perfect path double cover conjecture
An oriented perfect path double cover (OPPDC) of a graph $G$ is a collection of directed paths in the symmetric orientation $G_s$ of $G$ such that each arc of $G_s$ lies in exactly one of the paths and each vertex of $G$ appears just once as a beginning and just once as an end of a path. Maxov{'a} and Ne{v{s}}et{v{r}}il (Discrete Math. 276 (2004) 287-294) conjectured that ...
متن کاملTight Bounds for Chevalley--warning--ax--katz Type Estimates, with Improved Applications
In 1935, C. Chevalley proved a conjecture by E. Artin: if F ðX1; . . . ; XmÞ is a homogeneous polynomial of total degree d < m over a 7nite 7eld Fq having q 1⁄4 p elements, then F has a non-trivial zero. Chevalley showed the result to hold even when the homogeneity hypothesis is replaced by the weaker requirement that F ðX1; . . . ; XmÞ has no constant term. Almost immediately, E. Warning showe...
متن کاملKemnitz’ Conjecture Concerning Lattice-Points in the Plane
In 1961, P. Erds, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv proved a remarkable theorem stating that each set of 2n− 1 integers contains a subset of size n, the sum of whose elements is divisible by n [1]. Attempting to give a similar result for pairs of integers, A. Kemnitz suggested the following conjecture: Every choice of 4n− 3 lattice–points in the plane contains a subset of cardinality n, whose centroid is ...
متن کاملThe Chevalley - Warning Theorem ( Featuring . . . the Erdös - Ginzburg - Ziv Theorem ) Pete
In this handout we shall discuss a result that was conjectured by Emil Artin in 1935 and proved shortly thereafter by Claude Chevalley. A refinement was given by Artin’s graduate student Ewald Warning, who, as the story goes, was the one whom Artin had intended to prove the theorem before Chevalley came visiting Göttingen and got Artin to say a little too much about the mathematics his student ...
